Evansville, Ind. - The USI Men's Rugby Club won the 2013 NSCRO Mid-Central Qualifier Match Saturday, this is the first time in the club's history that it has won a NSCRO Mid-Central Qualifier Match.
The qualifier match which was held on USI's home field and was between USI and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, the final score for the match was 24-17. The two schools faced each other in the 2012 NSCRO Mid-Central Qualifier Match.
The USI Men's Rugby Club will now participate in the NSCRO Mid-Central Regionals which takes place in Elkhart, IN during Nov. 16 and 17.
On Saturday Nov. 16 USI will play Franciscan University at 3 p.m. Eastern. If USI wins it will advance on to Sunday's match, the opposing team in Sunday's match will be determined by the winner of St. John's University and Wittenberg University.
USI's Man of the Match for Wisconsin-Parkside was freshmen back Ryan Potendyk. The Man of the Match is an honor given by our club each match to a player whose in-game efforts were exceptional and represents our club's core values.
Junior back Doug Rose was nominated as our club's Man of the Match by the Wisconsin-Parkside.
The match against Wisconsin-Parkside was one of USI's toughest this season and was up for grabs until the end of the contest.
At the end of the first half USI lead with a score of 14-5, but the tides quickly changed during the second half when Wisconsin-Parkside scored two tries and tied USI's score making it 17-17 with 10 minutes remaining in the second half.
USI pushed for Wisconsin-Parkside's try zone several times in the remaining minutes of the match. Senior back Tyler Pipes would squeeze his way into the try zone off of a five meter scrum at the six minute mark propelling USI to a lead of 24-17.
USI would maintain the lead for the duration of the match and clinch a spot in the NSCRO Mid-Central Regionals.
USI's record extends to an overall record of 12-1, 7-0 in conference.
